EASA informs airlines and passengers about how to fly safely with Portable Electronic Devices containing Lithium Batteries
As some of us prepare to travel for the end of year holidays, the European Aviation Safety Agency publishes a Safety Information Bulletin (SIB) to inform airlines and passengers on how to fly safely carrying Portable Electronic Devices (PED). PED containing lithium batteries such as laptops, mobile phones, tablets, electronic cigarettes should be carried in the passenger cabin, to enable the crew to react rapidly in case an incident involving such a PED occurs.
The Safety Information Bulletin can be found here.

Demand for air travel is evolving
Demand dynamics shift according to different stages of a country’s economic development. Emerging markets throughout the world have shown that air travel is one of the first discretionary expenditures to be added as consumers join the global middle class. As emerging market demand begins to develop, it may take the form of nonscheduled services to leisure destinations. Later, the same demand may migrate to scheduled services of low-cost carriers or to network airlines.
Tailwinds 2016 published
PwC released its annual Tailwinds 2016, which provides an overview of the current state of the global airline industry and highlights the latest emerging trends. This year’s report delves into how airlines are allocating profits and suggests ways to prepare for long-term growth while satisfying the needs of stakeholders.
With low fuel prices, growth in air travel, and capacity discipline, airlines have reached record profitability for their fifth consecutive year, but what’s next? According to PwC, airlines will need to work harder to secure profitable growth in the future under today’s changing economic conditions.
Airlines reaffirm sustainability commitments
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) 72nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) overwhelmingly approved a resolution urging governments to adopt a single global carbon offset mechanism to address carbon emissions from international aviation at the 39th Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) later this year.
“Airlines are committed to sustainability. With improvements to technology, operations and infrastructure and the deployment of sustainable alternative fuels, we are delivering results against our climate change commitments. However, to achieve carbon-neutral growth from 2020, we also need a mandatory global carbon offset scheme,” said Tony Tyler, IATA’s Director General and CEO.
European Airspace modernization
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released a study projecting a one million job and EUR245 billion boost to European prosperity in 2035 from airspace modernization.
Europe is well-served by air connectivity, which today supports 11.7 million European jobs and $860 billion of European GDP. But it is inefficient. Average flights are nearly 50 kilometers longer than they need to be in terms of distance traveled and delays average around 10 minutes per flight. This inefficiency negatively impacts prosperity, productivity and sustainability. An IATA-commissioned study by SEO Economic Research estimated that these inefficiencies, if unchecked, will grow to cost the European economy EUR 245 billion in 2035.

Here’s how the airline industry could cut its emissions in half
Fuel economy is hardwired into the airline industry’s DNA. After all, fuel costs money, and using less of the stuff is an easy way to beef up the bottom line. Well … maybe not easy, but certainly worth doing. Saving fuel, by reducing carbon emissions, can help save the planet. And those cuts could come at little to no cost to the companies themselves.
